Zero Horizon

Zero Horizon is a first-person shooter game developed by olzhas1one using GZDoom as engine. The FPS combines a retro style with run and gun gameplay and a bit of puzzles and keycard hunting. It also features four episodes, each having eight missions, and, in relation to vanilla Doom, it brings new monsters (some aliens), sounds, music, HUD, screens, and weapons.

Some monsters have new sprites and sounds, but they behave like the originals, except the Arch-vile's replacement, a cross of Cthulhu and the Baron of Hell who shoots projectiles and can't revive anyone. Sounds, graphics, weapons and stuff come from several sources, such as Freedoom, Realm667, Duke Nukem 3D, HACX and even Final Doom's box.

I played three maps of the first episode and they are very straightforward, where you really can just go running and gunning, without needing to combing every single point of the level searching for some detail that will allow the player to proceed. I like this kind of map and everything is combining harmoniously.

Apart from the maps, nothing here shows drastic changes. It seems to me that the modifications were just in order to guarantee a retro run and gun FPS. Overall, it seems to me very solid in what it meant to be and it is fun, at least as far as I could see.

Plot

Zero Horizon's plot is simple, but efficient: the player takes the role of a marine that was in a military base when the aliens invaded it and yada yada yada all that stuff…

Compatibility

Despite Zero Horizon is a Doom mod, it is standalone. It comes with its IWAD and GZDoom, and also can be combined with some other PWADs that are all around.

It is the first game of the author, and he promised to add deathmatch and cooperative support. Let's hope he fulfills it.
