2022 Gaming DooM Awards

Gaming DooM Awards is our annual listing of the best and most interesting mods for Doom we could get to know, and in its 2022 issue, we have once again nine works that might worth checking out.

Like the previous issues, 2020 Gaming DooM Awards and 2021 Gaming DooM Awards, the 2022 list was made in a hurry, but I really think we could round good stuff here that might help you to expand even further your experience with the great id Software's FPS.

Now, onto the awarded mods!

Voxel Doom

Developed by Cheello, Voxel Doom is a mod that replaces sprites from monsters, projectiles, scenery elements and pick-ups with models based on fully three-dimensional voxels, which implies making these objects having not only height and width, but also depth.

I followed the development of this project on Twitter, and I can say that it was really well done and is very good, surpassing in quality and fidelity to the original resources by far from what we see in mods such as Vanilla Doom 3D Models for Doom I & II, supplying a long time desire of the players.

Voxel Doom also earned a Cacoward in 2022, which is more than deserved.

Gun Bonsai

Gun Bonsai is a mod developed by ToxicFrog that grants XP when hurting monsters, which can be used to level up your weapons and the protagonist, earning powerful upgrades and abilities.

There are already many PWADs with this kind of thing, but the highlight here is that Gun Bonsai does it in vanilla or with any other mods that are eventually loaded together.

In addition to high compatibility with both PWADs (even considering full conversions like Ashes 2063 TC or gameplay enhancements like DRLA) and IWADs (including Heretic, Hedon and others), Gun Bonsai is highly customizable and promises a wide range of variety of weapon upgrades, skills, etc.

In short, it's really an innovative work that opens up huge possibilities in our gameplay and mod combinations. By the way, Gun Bonsai won a Cacoward this year as well.

Features

  • Highly compatible - Designed to play nice with non-doom IWADs, gameplay overhauls, and total conversions. It's even compatible with some commercial GZDoom and works with and LZDoom.
  • Highly configurable - The options screen is comprehensive and self-documenting, with in-game tooltips. Many compatibility and balance settings can be tweaked to your liking, for an optimal experience with whatever maps and mods you're using. Other mods can automatically apply compatibility tweaks with the BONSAIRC lump.
  • A buffet of weapon upgrades. Lightning bullets, incendiary rockets, fragmentation plasma bolts, and much more.
  • A sampler platter of player upgrades. Scavenge ammo from the dead, swap weapons instantly, and force enemies that attack you to feel your pain.
  • Special mod integrations. Gun Bonsai gains additional features when combined with Legendoom, Indestructable, and score mods like Lazy Points.

Guns & Toys

Guns & Toys is an edition of the mod Days of the Toys, a Mike MacDee's creation based on his graphic novel of same name, made to be combined with other maps. It's a horror mod inspired by this genre during the 80's. The objective is to find your son and escape from a holocaust of murderous and relentless toys. What's left to do with enemies is pretty much Doom: explode, maim, and incinerate!

War Rooster

A Dr_Cosmobyte's mod, War Rooster is set during a demonic invasion that takes place in 1968. It brings a large and diverse arsenal, alternative shooting modes and new pick-ups. It's interesting how the weapons are more realistic, maybe even because of the year in which the plot happens. Another thing worth mentioning is that it is also compatible with Heretic and Hexen.

Synopsys

1968. In order to contain the first demonic invasion waves, the UAC launches the covert operation known as "The Plutonia Experiment". Quantum accelerators were built and task forces sent into the Congo jungles to fight the hellish creatures that escaped. After some time, the war ended and time passed, everything shrouded in secrecy. Cpl. Jackson, the last member of the War Roosters team (6a1os de Guerra), is a renegade, rejected by society. But when the new demonic invasions began, 20 years later, everything returns, including his memories. Though he still knows the rules of combat, Jackson feels old and rusty. However, he needs to survive this nightmare once more and fight his fears.

Inferno Suture

Created by LossForWord, Inferno Suture is a fast-paced weapon pack that at first glance follows a consistent visual style reminiscent of Trailblazer. It has altfires, promotes run and gun gameplay and its arsenal mixes conventional and fictional items.

Plot

The year is 2050. Advanced dimensional warping experiments have created deep rifts in our reality, causing monstrosities from parallel dimensions to bleed through ours. Jack "Brute" Hughes is one of many mercenaries hired to locate the epicenter of these dimensional wounds, destroying anything that comes out of them and permanently sealing the rifts, an operation codenamed "Inferno Suture".

Protocol: Disposable

Inspired by some of the tactical mods from the Doom community, Protocol: Disposable is a work of LossForWords where you play as an ordinary soldier on hist way to fight and survive the worst of Hell. It features seven weapons, some new items, and most interestingly, alternate ammo types.

Protocol: Disposable does not bring new monsters, which means it can be combined with different enemy packs.

Final Raider

Another mod from LossForWords that integrates the Gaming DooM Awards 2022, Final Raider is a mod for Tomb Raider for Doom starring none other than our Lara Croft.

Final Raider brings an arsenal composed of 7 weapons inspired by the classic line of PSX games to go through levels and improve the experience of finding secrets and exploring maps. You can also use alternate ammo types to fight bosses with ease, just like in the original Tomb Raider.

God Complex

God Complex is a gameplay mod developed by UltraViolenceX. It combines shooting, looting, "power fantasy" and an innovative progression system that will make you fight stronger bosses as you level up and improve your arsenal of weapons and items. This progression system promises to reach even "divine" powers.

Acoording to RiboZurai, God Complex is perhaps more adequate and fun in regular WADs. In slaughtermaps, things get too chaotic.

Disaster Jester

Disaster Jester is another LossForWords creation that won one of the Gaming DooM Awards in 2022. It is a mod that brings the the DC Comics' character Harlequina to id's FPS. Harley comes with a varied arsenal consisting of sledgehammers, cork shooters, ice grenades, bazookas and some cool new power-ups. Plus, it has some raw Arleen Sorkin quotes.

Gaming DooM #35

Down below, there is the 35th episode of our Gaming DooM series, the one with narrated videos about the classic id Software's FPS. This episode was basically the 2022 Gaming DooM Awards. It has no English subtitles, though:

Well, that's it for this year.

I hope the 2022 Gaming DooM Awards was useful to at least introduce you to some interesting and new things to play next year.

But be sure to leave it in the comments which 2022 mods caught your attention the most, and which of the ones we mentioned you know and like best.

Cheers and see you in 2023, God willing, and He will!
