MiniDoom 2 [2D platform Doom remake]

MiniDoom 2 is a reimagination of the classic id Software’s first person shooter franchise as a 2D, retro-styled, 2D platform game. This fangame was developed by Calavera Studios and adapts weapons, monsters and other several Doom elements to an old school run and gun gameplay quite in a Contra or Metal Slug vein.
The game also presents itself as a overhauled remake of the first MiniDoom, bringing 17 new levels, two new bosses, 14 regular weapons and additional secret ones, a Heavy Metal BGM, secrets, upgrades, power-ups, smooth and responsive controls, colorful and funny artwork inspired on ‘80s and ‘90s classics, five difficulty levels, an overworld map that allows to select levels or revisit completed areas and the possibility of saving and loading matches. According to Calavera Studios website, this game won't get multiplayer nor mobile support, though.

You should note that, while MiniDoom was based only on the first Doom, MiniDoom 2 isn’t limited to any specific title of the franchise, featuring an interesting mix of elements from several games from the series.

On my opinion, MiniDoom 2 was able to overcome by far the excellence of the first, greatly increasing the original concept, which, in the end, resulted in a extremely fun, challenging and addictive game with even more possibilities. To this, is added the nostalgia promoted by its retro style and many Doom elements, such as sound effects and other game resources, used here.

The above video is a showcase of the game and makes a small review about it. It had three, more or less, of its level played without cuts and with the original sounds and music.

Plot

"Mars, in the year 20XX, the humans opened the gates to Hell from where legions of demons started to pour out. Only one space marine can stop the invasion."

The plot is simple like that indeed, after all, a good Doom has to have little talk and lots of action.

Gameplay

Like I said earlier, MiniDoom 2 combines platform and run and gun like great names of the genres from the past. The player controls the Doomguy, who can jump, shot in several directions, crouch, roll, collect weapons and use it against the game's zombies and demons. Besides the arsenal items, that can be stacked and switched at practically any moment in-game in a system inspired on Doom 2016's, Doomguy can also throw grenades that cause a good explosion that can even inflict splash damage.

The controls are indeed very good, however I have some problem on how the jump button responds. MiniDoom 2 even has support for controllers, but not only mines is wrecked, but I rather play 95% of the games on the same keyboard. I just need to get used to it. I found it great how the MiniDoom 2 combines the original scheme with classic platform elements. It's very intuitive for those who have experience with these games.

An interesting highlight is that the scenario is very interactive, even with enemies, on a bigger level than that of the classic Doom.

Another thing worth noting is that, much like the first MiniDoom, MiniDoom 2 offers challenging and progressive difficulty. Even on the third level, named "Ultra-Violence" here, it ain't no Mister Roger's Neighborhood. But this is nothing that can bring me down. You can get the hang of it just by insisting on beating the levels.
