Complex Doom

Complex Doom is a Doom mod created by Daedalus (or Cacodemon) that randomizes a number of new monsters and power-ups. The PWAD also features new items and weapons, besides inventory and bonus drop (health and armor) systems.

The weapons that spawn on the maps are not randomized, just monsters and power-ups. Part of the weaponry only drops from the enemies. The health and armor bonus I mentioned above are get if the player collects orbs that can drop from monsters, the "Essences".

The modifications implemented by Complex Doom often make the game substantially harder, due to the large amount of elements that are randomized when each map starts. In other words, sometimes, it gets unbalanced. For instance, Hitler can randomly spawn instead of a mere Wolfenstein SS, but this socialist beast remains strong as he is in Wolfenstein 3D: it has two forms, a lot of health and hitscan attack. And things can be even worse...

Another thing that deserves attention are the sound effects, especially from the guns. They are outrageously good. The HUD was also modified, Doomguy gets more evident blue eyes and his face can be all banged up when he dies due to some explosion.

There is also the LCA (Legendary Complex Addon) for this mod. It adds even more weapons and monsters to Complex Doom, including "legendary" ones. I might bring this add-on to the channel sooner or later.

Complex Doom is a cool mod, especially for those who like a lot of element variety and a difficulty a bit above the balanced, even with grenades and other helping items that the player might come across...

Weapons

I found it interesting that zombies could appear using weapons from the protagonist's arsenal, and much of it is familiar to us. Many weapons are seen in Brutal Doom and its derivatives, but they don't behave exactly the same. The differences become more evident when using the altfire, for instance.

I counted three different BFG types. Each one behaves in its own way. Also, the grenade and the landmine are quite useful, but you have to use these carefully to avoid wasting.

Compatibility

The PWAD ran here, apparently fine, on GZDoom (1.8.2, 2.4 and 3.2), Zandronum (2.0 and 3.0) and on ZDoom 2.8.1, with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Ultimate Doom, Final Doom and from both Freedoom’s phases.

You can play it multiplayer, but you will need a patch in order to make the Plasma Rifle work properly. It is included on our download pack down below.
