Doom Loot Box Mod is a Doom mod created by Rip and Tear that replaces
all the weapons and certain power-ups on the maps with loot boxes that
look like the ones from some contemporary games that are being released
by certain companies.
The loot boxes won’t always spawn and can be only opened with some golden keys that rarely drop from the monsters and can be stacked. Once unlocked, a loot box can randomly give one weapon or power-up to the player. There is even a marketplace, despite it doesn't work as you might expect. You can't buy anything even if you want to spend money to play vanilla Doom. To make things even trickier, monsters won't drop weapons in Doom Loot Box Mod, only ammo (if any).
The mod succeeded in reproducing how a game loses a lot of fun when it forces a lot of microtransactions. Without spending money, the player gets neutered and can't do much while the morons have fun wasting money with the game thinking they something amazing. It seems to me that this kind of thing often sacrifices the game's fun.
I don't know if Doom Loot Box Mod could be considered a joke WAD. The marketplace is certainly fake and the difficulty to find the boxes and keys can certainly frustrate casual players. But it can be fun, though, if you want a challenge. At least, the keys you collect are kept for the next maps.
In anyway, it seems that the mod was created just to make a laugh out of what the AAA gaming market has become: things for low foreheads to grind money with. Having said that, the concept of loot boxes is not intrinsically bad. If used consistently in order to increase the game's fun, and do not make it nauseous, if you don't spend money on it, I think it can be something positive. I would also say that a Doom mod can be enriched with loot boxes, within a context or with a better spawn rate of the crates and key drops.
