Sun Damage Omen

Sun Damage Omen is a Doom 2 mod that is being developed by DoukDouk (currently, it is a WIP), focusing on combining dark elements to a streamlined and fast-paced gameplay.

Inspired in games like BUTCHER and The Chronicles of Riddick and movies like Aliens and Terminator, Sun Damage Omen brings new weapons, sounds, HUD, fonts, monsters, music, and graphics. The melee combat was also enhanced and features a quick kick that is activated with the altfire from all the weapons. Besides that, the enemies are sensibly more dangerous and everything that was bullet related was replaced by projectiles here (except the Wolfenstein SS attack, so far).

Some elements sound effects and visuals like some monsters and the HUD (I found that kinda ugly, but it's well suited) surely can add to create a very creepy atmosphere, especially on dark maps with narrow aisles. The author is still creating the mod's episodes, but he suggests WADs like Hell for Leather and the Coffee Break for us to play it with.

Talking about the arsenal, it is totally new, but it doesn't consist in a very radical modification of the original weapons, especially in damage etc. The same can be said for the monsters. But keep in mind that Sun Damage Omen is still a Work in Progress, and is being created to be a total conversion, thus, so much can be eventually changed or rebalanced, even though the author states that he won't add new weapons. But the mod's combat was conceived to be like this, basically. It's very simple and straightforward, avoiding confusing upgrades or unique weapons for each class. It's just shoot 'em up and beat 'em up. In fact, the PWAD changes are more a refinement the game's original gameplay than an extension to it.

The goal of the mod to create a "dark, gritty, adrenaline-fueled madhouse" is certainly being achieved, and when the original maps of this TC are completed, the result will be more impressive.
Based on what I've seen so far, I'd bet on it.

Video

The first map of the above video was played on the Crazy Joe Devola map. The second part, as usual, was in the Map 32 in order to show the rest of the mod's weapons.

Compatibility

I ran Sun Damage Omen here on GZDoom 3.2 with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, Final Doom and from the Freedoom’s phase 2. The mod seems to work just fine with all that.
