Brutal Doom: Black Edition

Brutal Doom: Black Edition is an edition of the Sergeant Mark IV’s Doom mod, Brutal Doom, that improves its gameplay and sound and visual effects, promotes a realistic and creepy atmosphere and considerably raises the difficulty if compared to the original WAD.
Developed by the team Blackmore1014, Iddqd_Idkfa_Idclip, Doomsmile and Bifurcator, Brutal Doom: Black Edition practically keeps the Brutal Doom’s basics, but extends its concept by bringing, in addition to the many graphic and sound improvements, several new features, such as options to further customize games and elements from Doom 3 and Doom 2016.

The arsenal is based on the Brutal Doom v20b one. The only new weapon I noticed was the Soul Cube. Brutal Doom: Black Edition features two hero classes: Tactical, which has a more realistic movement, depends on stamina for running and submit to armors weight; and the Original BD, which has the standard Doomguy's movement that we are used with.

Quick Facínora's review

I really liked the Doom 3 and Doom 4 elements combined here, such as the flashlight, glory kills and the Soul Cube system, which can even activate a power that makes the screen turn white and you blow everything up. Also, the glory kills provide a lot of fun with the fatalities, as this ends getting essential to survive in the game, since it kills the monsters for good and makes you invulnerable for a few moments. In the other hand, I didn't really like collecting the Berserk Pack or the Demon Rune (which drops a lot) because you get stuck with the fists only, while the effect lasts, and this is annoying.

These extra game options can be interesting to vary the matches or even make a any mess in the game. I dug the imps' options. The maps turn can turn into a real war zone. I just found the names of the menu a bit weird. There is an explanation for each of them, but I can not help to not find it rather confusing.

In the end, this PWAD ends up being another Brutal Doom variant that, at first, looks like more of the same. In fact, the difficulty level, one of the highlights of the mod, is similar to that of Insanity's Brutality or Insanity's Requiem. However, it has some original elements and is very well done, with a bunch of original elements and good visuals, and everything is combined harmoniously. Also, the gameplay is well balanced, unlike some other similar projects we see around.

In any way, it's worth checking Brutal Doom: Black Edition out at least for a change. The many glory kills combined with the classic BD fatalities were the PWAD's highlights for me. These are not only cool to watch, but add an interesting spin to the matches.

Compatibility

Brutal Doom: Black Edition ran without me noticing any problems here on GZDoom (3.3.1) with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, and both Freedoom's phases.

In the download package down below, there is also an old version of the mod, the Legacy Black Edition v2.1c and and optional add-ons that I didn't have time to test.
