Metz

Metz, also known as Metz Cathetral or even Hokuto no Cathedral, is a Doom deathmatch map created by Benoit Spacher, the iceman57, in order to develop his project, Hokuto no Doom even further, giving continuity to this game. Unfortunately, the map was never included in the game, but it's a beautiful job and promotes an excellent arena for multiplayer or offline skirmish deathmatches.
The map features plenty of opened space to run and gun and is based on a real historical monument, the Metz Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz) which, by its turn, is located in Metz, capital of Lorraine, France. Except for the outdoors part, which is purely fictional, the map was created to reproduce, in details, this wonderful Catholic cathedral, with is about 500 years old (it began its construction in 1220 and was completed in 155), displays the largest expanse of stained glass in the world and has one of the highest naves in the world. The Cathedral of Saint Stephen construction happened in an ancient place from the Fifth Century that was consecrated to this saint, the first Christian martyr: a small chapel that was the sole structure spared during the sack of 451 by Attila's Huns.

Originally, the map was also built to represent the Hokuto no Ken's fifteenth episode in the author's Hokuto no Doom. Iceman57 wanted it to be Zaria's cathedral, if I'm not mistaken, and, since he lives near this historical monument, he used it as inspiration not only for the map's design, but for the textures it features. The WAD also has its own BGM, created by the same Hokuto no Doom's soundtrack artist, Stephan "Selfdestructboy" Hauschildt.

Videos

The above video is a showcase of the map being played against Zandronum's bots in an offline vanilla's skirmish.

This one, by it's turn, was also played against bots in the map, but with Death Foretold 2.0.

Compatibility

I played Metz extensively here with GZDoom (1.8.2, 2.4 and 3.2) and Zandronum (2.0 and 3.0), with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Ultimate Doom and Final Doom and from both Freedoom's phases. The author also guarantees it works with Chocolate Doom, although I didn't try with it yet.
