Doom 4 Doom (D4D)

Doom 4 Doom (D4D) is a spectacular mod created by DBThanatos, Major Cooke, ZZYZX, and Michaelis that brings Doom 2016 (or Doom 4) weapons, monsters and game mechanics (like glory kills, in-game store and weapons upgrades) to the original and classic Doom.
The mod also brings an enhanced difficulty level if compared to the vanilla Doom, not to mention a huge load of advanced features that were added in the PWAD. In fact, after DBThanatos retired from the project, Doom 4 Doom is being headed by Major Cooke himself and it is still being actively updated, at least by the time of this publication, even becoming open source in the process. The last version we covered was the 2.0.3, but there are instructions for you to download the v3+ version.

The above video was the first showcase we made for Doom 4 Doom while it was on 1.x version. Its been upgraded a lot since then, but it still can give you the general idea.

The above playlist, by its turn, features all of our Doom 4 Doom videos, including some of it's add-ons.

Compatibility (v2.0.3)

I ran the Doom 4 Doom V2.0.3 here on GZDoom 2.2 with the IWADs from The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, Final Doom and from both Freedoom phases. It seems to work fine with all that, but the newest versions have different compatibilities.

D4D Installation Instructions (v3+ Only)

Like I said before, D4D is now open source. If you wish to contribute to it directly, you will need to know how to work with GitHub if you wish to contribute directly with pull requests and follow the project's rules (these are in the read me section).

Anyway, let's go to the D4D v3.x instructions:
  1. Get the latest GZDoom version. In case the mod cannot run in the latest version, try the latest devbuild.
  2. Download MC_Utility.pk3;
  3. Download D4D.pk3;
  4. Download D4DResources.pk3;
  5. Making a duplicate .ini file specifically for D4D is HIGHLY recommended.
  6. If you use the ZDL launcher, make sure the order is like the one in the screenshot found down below (MC_Utility.pk3, D4DResources.pk3, D4D.pk3);
  7. ZDL 3.2.2.2 is recommended but any launcher with loading priorities will work;
  8. (Optional) Save the configuration once finished by clicking the ZDL button, and then “Save .ZDL”. This will ensure quick and easy switching between different mods on a whim and is extremely useful for choosing what mods/maps to play, not limited to D4D;
  9. The original instructions are here, including the ones to load the bleeding edge variants of the mod.
  10. If it's too hard for you even with this step-by-step guide, just download the standard version (V2.0.3) anyway.
