Behead the Undead 2: Project Crypt

Behead the Undead 2: Project Crypt is a first-person shooter heavily inspired on Cry of Fear created and released by Large Hard on 2019. The game was independently developed on GZDoom, an advanced Doom source port.
It’s a sequel to Behead the Undead, a Doom mod, however it’s not just completely standalone and has substantially different graphical and sound styles from its predecessor, but features a gameplay focused on campaign instead of invasion. Also, the sequence is much darker and doesn’t keep anything from Doom that can be seen on naked eye during the matches.

In fact, Behead the Undead 2 brings completely new monsters, weapons, textures, maps and other assets. Another different thing is the progression, which, by not showing an intermission screen between the levels, isn’t very explicit.

Video

In the above video, I showcased and reviewed Behead the Undead 2: Project Crypt a bit. Don't forget to enable English subtitles if you can't read Portuguese. The first part was played by me and the second one by Tyrant120.

Short Facínora's review

Here's the deal: I don't like this type of game. I get very tense and it becomes more a test of nerves than of skill for me. I prefer something that involves frantic shooting, where you don't even have time to think. However, I know how to appreciate a good work.

The graphic, sound and gameplay elements of Behead the Undead 2 have been combined in a very consistent and harmonious way, the scenarios are satisfactorily complex, the difficulty seems balanced and the atmosphere gets to be horrifying at a level that a theme like this demands. Another great point seems to be the progression in-levels, which looks like very adequate, what I also noted in other works where olzhas1one has been involved, such as T.R.E.K and Zero Horizon.

It also draws attention as the modifications leave no indication that the game was built over Doom (at least not with a naked eye), which denotes hard work on the part of the developers.

If you like this style of horror game, you should try Behead the Undead 2 out.

Compatibility

Behead the Undead 2 is a standalone shooter, meaning that you need to only download and decompress it and then execute the file gzdoom.exe in order to play it. There are versions for both 32 and 64-bit Windows, even though Large Hard made a confusion with it at Mod DB:
  • The one where is written "Download (Win 86 bit)" is for Windows 32-bit.
  • The one with "Download (Win 64 bit) is for Windows 64-bit.
I think this confusion was made due to the x86 and x64 thing. Anyway, our download link points to the Windows 32-bit version, which I think is more embracing nowadays. You can get the 64-bit version at Mod DB with the link provided in the "More" section of this post.

Loading BTU2 with other ports

Although Behead the Undead 2 comes ready to run, you can load its IWAD in your GZDoom and play with your own settings, without having to mess with the Options, etc. To do this, just copy the btu2.ipk3 file in your GZDoom folder. Tyrant120 tested it on LZDoom and said it works fine ass well, what can be interesting for those with older machines to be able to run Behead the Undead 2 in a decent manner. It wont run with ZDoom or Zandronum, though.
