Gambiarra Flakes

Gambiarra is a Flakes Doom add-on developed by Facínora and GAA1992 that add elements from even more Doom editions to this excellent mod.

Besides weaponry based on the alpha and beta Doom versions, Gambiarra promotes a MP40, fixes the Wolfenstein SS’ rotations and implements a jukebox with the background music from the Super Nintendo’s Doom version and two songs from this console’s Wolfenstein 3D port.

The new weapons feature different visuals, names and behaviors from the originals, since they were added not only in a coherent fashion, but also in order to be relevant in the game. I used DemonSteele´s jukebox as base for the Gambiarra's one and created a menu where you can turn autostart on or off. You can also set keys to skip the current song or play the standard map's BGM while you play the game.

I am liking the results and the experience quite a lot, although, originally, the new weapons were more nerfed. GAA1992 enhanced them, but ended buffing them as well. It got more fun to play anyway. Maybe we will continue to modify and create more things here, but, at first, my goal of adding elements of Dooms that were lacking in Flakes was achieved, besides all the learning I had doing that.

Videos

The match above was recorded with The Ultimate Doom and Brutal Doom v20b Monsters Only to show that Flakes Doom is still compatible with monster packs even with Gambiarra loaded. I used a public beta version to play it and it still had minor bugs back then. But that's our official showcase for the add-on.

The above playlist has all of our videos that features the add-on.

Weapons

  • Machine Gun - One of the initial weapons. It is best suited to shoot enemies quickly in a short range or close combat, but drains ammo like a bitch. It uses graphics from the alpha versions.
  • Rifle - Can be dropped from the Zombieman and be spawned randomly instead of the ammo Clip. It deals more damage than the pistol but it is slow and has an annoying kick. It also uses graphics from the alpha (v0.4). This weapon is better for fighting at greater distances than the Machine Gun, if you don't have anything else.
  • MP40 - This one can be dropped from the Wolfenstein SS and randomly spawned in the Chaingun's spots on the maps. It's way better than the standard Machine Gun, but i's the only one that isn't really from any other official Doom.
  • Plasma Rifle Prototype - It is a reference to the Doom Press Release Beta, but has substantially different appearance and behavior than the Plasma Rifle of this game's version. It still fires alternating green and red balls, but deals more pain and needs to charge before shooting. Within Gambiarra's "lore", it is the original gun that forked into both the BFG 9000 and the Plasma Rifle.

Compatibility

Gambiarra needs Flakes Doom 2.5 and it ran fine here on GZDoom (2.4 and 3.2) and Zandronum 3.0, with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Ultimate Doom, Final Doom and from both Freedoom's phases.

I didn't test it very deeply, but I can't remember anything that could make this add-on not work with IWADs from other games that were already compatible with Flakes Doom since its version 2.3, like Hexen, Chex Quest, Chex Quest 3, Heretic, Strife, Return of the Triad, Hacx 2.0 and Adventures of Square. It should also work smoothly with all that.

If you want to ensure that Wolfenstein SS won't replace any monster of the desired package, just load Flakes Doom and Gambiarra before its file. Probably, this will sort things out.
