Brutal Friends Companion Mod

Sergeant Mark IV's Brutal Friends Companion Mod is a Doom WAD that brings computer-controlled companions to fight at the player’s side. It consists in a standalone version of the Brutal Marines script, designed to run without needing Brutal Doom, and brings new allies.
The companions are randomly summoned using the Teleport Beacons (which replace the Invisibility Spheres) or directly via console, can teleport themselves next to the player if they go too far or get trapped in the scenery, won’t cause friendly fire and won’t block movement unless they are engaged in combat. You can also order the allies to stand still if you press "use" on them. If this PWAD is loaded with Brutal Doom, the companions will gain the ability to recognize major threats such as Cyberdemons, Masterminds and Barons of Hell, and won't get near them.

One of the Brutal Friends's use is that, according to Sergeant Mark IV himself, it can be edited and
embedded in other mods. Added to that, it isn't as OP as Brother in Arms, another ally mod for Doom. The Brutal Friends are efficient, but not too much, and, if you play without summoning them on console, you won't call too many of them which would make the game very easy.

The above video is our Brutal Friends' showcase made in our traditional style.
This one, by its turn, was made by the mod's author himself when he released it.

Companions

So far, the mod contains nine Brutal Friends: Doom Marine, Unturned Zombieman, Female Doom Marine, Unturned Shotgun Guy, Unturned Heavy Weapon Dude, Sentry Bot, German Shepherd, Daisy and Baby Cacodemon (Hissy), being the last two easter eggs that only can be summoned via console.

The codes to summon them are:
  • Summon FriendMarine1 – Summons a regular Doom Marine;
  • Summon FriendMarine2 – Summons an unturned Zombieman;
  • Summon FriendMarine3 – Summons a female Doom Marine;
  • Summon FriendMarine4 – Summons an unturned Shotgunguy;
  • Summon FriendMarine5 – Summons an unturned Heavy Weapon Dude;
  • Summon Sentrybot – Summons a Sentry Bot like the one in Doom 3 with dual plasma guns;
  • Summon FriendDog – Summons a German Shepherd (similar to the MBF Dog);
  • Summon FriendDaisy – Summons Daisy (The Rabbit that is shown dead on a stake at the end of Doom 1);
  • Summon FriendHissy – Summons a baby cacodemon.

Compatibility

I ran Brutal Friends here on GZDoom (1.8.2, 2.4 and 3.4.0) and Zandronum (2.0 and 3.0), with the IWADs from Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, and both Freedoom's phases . It seems to work fine with all that.

Like I said before, Brutal Friends can be easily combined with virtually any gameplay mod, as long as it's stay over everything else.

Also, the PWAD kinda works on Heretic without having to edit things, but some graphics get screwed and can summon allies via console, as this FPS does not have the invisibility spheres.

More

  1. Attention: make sure you have bind the inventory controls in options to use it, since the Teleport Beacons are stacked there, up to a maximum of five units.
  2. So far, Brutal Friends is still a WIP, which means that it can be updated eventually.
